Q: What parts of Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park are open?

A:  The Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is open again 24/7.  Some areas of the park are still closed while repairs are being made.  The Kahuku Unit, located an hour south of the main entrance on Highway 11 near mile marker 70.5 in Ka‘ū, is open Wednesday through Sunday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.  


Q: Why doesn't the park open the upper Mauna Loa Road?

A: The summit of Mauna Loa remains closed. The road is closed due to the Keauhou Fire that started August 5  Once the fire is out, Mauna Loa Road will remain closed for extensive restoration efforts.

Q: What is the status of Chain of Craters-Kalapana evacuation route??

A: Chain of Craters-Kalapana Road was re-established as an evacuation route. The one-way gravel route is for evacuation purposes only if Highway 130 is covered in lava. The upper part of Chain of Craters Road remains passable.


Q: Should I change my vacation plans for another time?

A: There is no reason for travelers to change or alter their travel plans. There are numerous activities available insdie Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and on Hawai‘i Island (including four other national parks), and part of Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park is still open to the public. All accommodations, activities and attractions on the island are also operating normally. Both public airports remain open.
