Credit or Debit Cards Only

Beginning May 26, 2023 Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park will only accept credit or debit cards for entrance fees and passes and will no longer accept cash payments. Consider purchasing your pass ahead of time on Recreation.gov

Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park will modify its entrance fees to provide additional funding for infrastructure and maintenance needs to enhance the visitor experience. 

Motor Coaches Prohibited in Large Sections of the Park

Large vehicles, defined as more than 26 feet in length and/or more than eight feet wide, are only allowed to operate on Crater Rim Drive to Kilauea Visitor Center, Kūkamāhuākea, and Uēkahuna. Mauna Loa Road to the Kīpukapuaulu turnabout. For safety reasons, motor coaches will be prohibited elsewhere in the park. 

Standard Entrance Pass  $15.00–$30.00

All visitors at Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park are required to pay an entrance fee. If you already have a valid, America the Beautiful—National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Annual Pass or Hawaiʻi Annual Tri-Park Pass, you are not required to purchase a digital pass through Recreation.gov. If you arrive to the park entrance and it is not staffed, purchase an online pass or pay at the entrance at another time. Print out or download the pass on your mobile device in advance of your visit. Connectivity may be limited, and the digital pass must be available to show at all times when visiting Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park. For purposes of upgrading to annual or lifetime passes: Digital passes may be accepted at parks other than Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, as credit towards an upgrade to annual or lifetime passes, within 7 days from the date of purchase. Passes are non-transferrable, non-refundable, not replaceable if lost or stolen, and are void if altered or reproduced. 

Private Vehicle Pass - $30.00
The private vehicle pass admits the passholder and up to 14 passengers of a single, private (non-commercial) vehicle. 

Motorcycle Pass-  $25.00
Admits the passholder and passenger of one motorcycle.

Pedestrian/Cyclist Pass - $15.00
Admits one individual bicyclist, hiker, or pedestrian visiting without a private vehicle. An individual pass is not required for visitors aged 15 and under. 

Annual Tri Park Pass  - $55.00
Hawai'i Tri-Park Annual Pass The annual pass is valid for entrance fees for pass holder and occupants of a single, private, non-commercial vehicle at Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park, Haleakalā National Park, and Puʻuhonua o Hōnaunau National Historical Park. The park is not responsible for misplaced, lost, or stolen cards. This pass does not cover camping fees and is non-transferable and non-refundable. Hawaiʻi Tri-Park Annual Pass can be purchased at the entrance station.

Federal Lands Passes[
A series of park passes.]America the Beautiful – The National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Passes

The America the Beautiful – The National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Pass Series includes different options of interagency passes that provide access to more than 2,000 federal recreation areas across the United States.

Passes cover:

entrance fees at National Park Service and US Fish and Wildlife sites
standard amenity fees (day-use fees) at Bureau of Land Management, Bureau of Reclamation, US Forest Service, and US Army Corps of Engineers sites

In general, passes cover the above types of fees for everyone in a personal vehicle at per-vehicle fee areas or up to four adults at sites that charge per person. Children ages 15 or under are admitted free. Two lifetime passes (Senior and Access) provide additional benefits, such as a 50-percent discount on camping at some sites. Always check with individual sites for details.

Annual Fourth Grade Pass for US students in fourth grade: Free
Annual Senior Pass: $20
Lifetime Senior Pass: $80
Lifetime Access Pass: Free
Annual Volunteer Pass: Free (250 hours of volunteer service at any of the six participating federal agencies is required)
Lifetime Military - Gold Star & U.S. Veteran Pass: Free*

*A new program that provides free access for US military veterans and Gold Star Family members took effect in fall 2020 as a way to thank them for their support of our country and to encourage them to explore recreational opportunities on their public lands and waters. Note regarding Military Pass: Available for current US military members and their dependents in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, and Coast Guard, as well as most members of the US Reserves and National Guard. Proper military ID required (CAC Card or DoD Form 1173).

Revenue from entrance fees remains in the National Park Service and helps ensure a quality experience for all who visit. At Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park, at least 80 percent of entrance fees stay in the park and are devoted to spending that supports the visitor. The other 20 percent of entrance fee income is shared with other national parks for their projects.
